8 Super Health Benefits of Essential Oil Diffusers
A lot of people asked me about my essential oil diffuser which I bought many years ago. It is one of those things that I regularly use and cannot recommend it enough.
Essential oils are well-known for their healing properties to soothe pain, aid sleep, relieve stress and even balance our hormones and general well-being. Using essential oil diffusers is an easy way of getting aromatherapy into our daily lives. Essential oils help us not only on a physical level but also on a mental and emotional level.
Here are 8 ways I use my essential oil diffuser with aromatherapy essential oils to help my overall health and well-being.
Aids Relaxation and Sleep
I usually use my diffuser during the evening/night time when I am trying to wind down and relax. Using a diffuser/humidifier is one of the easiest ways of getting the benefits of the essential oil aromatherapy into your bloodstream. Certain oils have a powerful calming effect on the body and mind by influencing the limbic region of the brain. There are many activities of the limbic system but it also plays a part in controlling our emotions and emotional health.
By diffusing these oils for approximately 20-30 minutes proper to sleeping, improves the body’s natural sleep pattern and stress.
To relax I use essential oils such as Lavender oil and Clary Sage, Roman Chamomile, Cedarwood and Valerian.
Aids Emotional Health and Lifts Mood
If you are feeling tired and lethargic, an essential oil diffuser is a fantastic way of perking up your mood and re-energising yourself or for de-stressing and calming.
Here are various essential oils I use with their benefits on my mood:
Lavender- known for its calming effect
Grapefruit and Lemon- aids sadness and depression and negativity
Sweet Orange- revitalises, makes me refreshed and uplifts me, it makes me happy
Nutmeg- gently stimulates the adrenal glands and boosts energy, it is very potent so use a lot less perhaps just one drop in the diffuser. This is a ‘warm/hot’ oil so use with caution as it can irritate the mucous membranes.
Black Pepper- Increases vitality and energy, it is very strong so use only 1-2 drops, this is a ‘warm/hot’ oil so use with caution as too much can irritate mucous membranes.
Balsam Fir- Instils a sense of energy and rigour and strength
I use citrus type of oils to uplift my mood and make me more energetic like Sweet Orange oil or Wild Orange, Lemongrass or Grapefruit.
Aids Immunity and Illness
Using a diffuser, regularly is a wonderful way of helping keep illnesses away such as the common cold and flu. Most essential oils are anti-microbial and when they turned into vapour and spread airborne, which can help boost your immune system and also rid the air of certain airborne pathogens, bacteria and viruses. Melaleuca oil is known to help cleanse the air.
These oils work by stimulating the production of white blood cells to boost the immune system by diffusing them into the air, they also help the humidity of the room and helps relieve dry coughs and tickly throats.
If I feel that I am getting a cough or cold I use Peppermint, Tea Tree oil, Eucalyptus oil, Lemongrass or Lemon oil, Rosemary oil, Grapefruit oil and Clary Sage oil, Cinnamon, Clove, Sweet Orange and Oregano oil.
Using essential oils in diffusers are a great way to help get rid of congestion and inflammation of the lungs and help you breathe more easily. When I was younger my mum used to put me over a bucket of hot water with a towel over my head and add a few drops of Eucalyptus oil to inhale, or over a facial steamer.
Using a diffuser is much easier and the smell spreads around the entire room. They are great for relieving respiratory illnesses such as asthma, bronchitis and allergies (although you have to use caution as people can also be allergic to essential oils).
For congestion and mucous, I use Eucalyptus oil, Peppermint oil, Pine oil, Spearmint oil and Rosemary oil.
Helps Relieve Aches and Pains
When you inhale essential oils which are diffused in the air, they travel fast through the blood/brain barrier into the bloodstream. Not only massaging essential oils with a carrier oil onto your skin, but diffusing them also helps with aches and pains.
For aches and pains, I use Clary Sage, Lavender, Chamomile, Ginger, Eucalyptus, Bergamot, and Rosemary.
Helps Improve Cognitive Function, Focus and Mental Clarity
Using essential oils in a diffuser is an effective way of enhancing your mood and thereby also helping your concentration and improve focus. With regular use, some essential oils can actually help cognitive function.
Oils such as Frankincense are good at increasing oxygen and blood flow into the pineal, pituitary and hypothalamus glands which support mental health and focus. They help clear brain fog and keep receptor sites within the brain free of congesting petrochemicals.
Oils that are useful for focus are Peppermint, Lemon, Frankincense and Eucalyptus, Clary Sage, Vetiver, Sandalwood, Cypress, Lemongrass, Lavender.
Pure Essential Oils are Not Toxic
Unlike some candles and some incense, essential oil diffusers use only water and a natural essential oil. If you have children or pets then using candles may hazardous. In addition, candles contain non- natural wicks and waxes which are made of paraffin wax giving off toxic vapours such as toluene and benzene and contain artificial scents that can cause an array of health issues. You can buy natural candles made of pure beeswax or hemp, soy or coconut oil but using a diffuser means you don’t need to keep re-buying candles too.
As an insect repellent.
You can diffuser essential oils in your home as a natural insect repellent. I found lemongrass and citronella to be the best in this regards for flies. Peppermint and Tea Tree are also good insect repellents.
It is definitely worth considering having an essential oil diffuser in your home, for your overall health and well-being, there is such a wide range out there in all shapes and sizes to suit everyone’s tastes.
Take caution to ensure you use 100% pure essential oils, preferably organic if you want the best health benefit. Never use oils that are not 100% pure.
